UTM OTEC, DCNS complete Malaysia ocean thermal plant study

DCNS and OTEC Centre of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM OTEC) have wrapped up the pre-feasibility study for the proposed ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) plant off Layang-Layang island in Malaysia.

The handing-over ceremony of the pre-feasiblity study was held last week at the UTM OTEC in Kuala Lumpur during the third national workshop on ocean energy, according to the Maritime Institute of Malaysia.

To remind, in April 2016, the French naval and defense specialist DCNS and UTM OTEC signed an agreement to join their complementary expertise in order to define the technical and commercial feasibility of OTEC plant off the Layan-Layang island.

OTEC uses the difference of temperature that naturally exists in tropical waters between the surface water and deep water to create electricity.

DCNS had previously said the island of Layang-Layang, situated off Sabah in the north of Malaysia, was well positioned for the development of OTEC with a temperature difference above 20ºC throughout the year.
