Tidal Harness up for IET innovation awards

Business & Finance

Tidal Harness has made it to the finals of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) 2017 Innovation Awards with its tidal energy technology.

Southampton-based tidal energy developer Tidal Harness has been shortlisted for the Power, Sustainability and Start-Up awards in recognition of reducing the cost of tidal energy through simplicity in technology.

Tidal Harness builds single moving part turbines for harnessing energy from tidal currents. The turbine has a submersible generator which does not make use of intermediary components and rare-earth magnets, according to the company.

The installation of turbines does not require offshore cranes, which delivers greater cost reductions and increased reliability, Tidal Harness said.

Following over 300 entries from 25 countries in the 15 award categories, Tidal Harness will join other finalists in London on November 15, 2017, for the announcement of the winners.

The IET is one of the world’s largest multidisciplinary engineering institutions with over 168,000 members in 150 countries.
