Tata Steel has secured a contract for the supply of export pipeline for Maersk Oil-operated high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) Culzean field in the UK Central North Sea.

Tata Steel will provide more than 18 000 tonnes of carbon steel welded line pipe with the core element of the scope of supply encompassing 53 km gas export pipeline.

The pipeline will tie into the existing Central Area Transmission System (CATS).

Tata Steel Commercial Manager, Exploration and Production, Richard Broughton, said:

We worked very closely with Maersk, to ensure that the stringent technical requirements were understood. Our technical capability to manufacture low temperature pipelines with tight dimensional control is well proven, and I am confident that this was a key consideration in the tender evaluation. Tata Steel has a proven global track record of managing complex project packages.”

The pipeline for the Culzean field will be built at Tata Steel’s UOE LSAW pipe mill located in UK, with BSR Pipeline Services providing the coating for the pipeline.

The duration of the project will be 18 months.

Culzean field, recently approved by the UK Oil & Gas Authority, is situated in the UK sector of the Central North Sea approximately 200 km east of Aberdeen in license block 22/25a. The water depth is approximately 88 m and the reservoir is located around 4,300 m below sea level.

The field has resources estimated at 250-300 million barrels of oil equivalent. Production is expected to start in 2019 and continue for at least 13 years, with plateau production of 60,000-90,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
