CSSC, CMB.TECH join forces on green-fueled ships, low-carbon technologies

Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry (BSIC), part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) has signed a strategic cooperation agreement with CMB.TECH and held a naming ceremony for two bulkers being built for the Belgium-based shipowner.

As informed, the two parties intend to focus on the market of green-fueled ships and jointly research and develop low-carbon and zero-emission technologies.

By working together, CSSC and CMB.TECH want to make ‘greater contributions’ to sustainable shipping on a global scale.

The cooperation agreement was signed on September 23, 2024, coinciding with the naming ceremony for two 210,000 dwt bulk carriers built by BSIC and CSSC for CMB.TECH.

The Capesize ships, Mineral Eire and Mineral Hellas, feature a length of 300 meters and a width of 50 meters. Scheduled for delivery later this year, the ship pair was ordered by the Belgian shipowner back in 2021.

Both ships recently completed their sea trials which have been ‘unanimously recognized’ by CMB.TECH and a classification society, CSSC said.

What is more, CCSC revealed that another two 210,000 dwt bulk carriers, No. 34 and No. 47, were undocked on September 23.

CMB.TECH currently has a fleet of 210,000 dwt Newcastlemax units on order at the abovementioned shipyard. Some of them will be delivered with ammonia dual-fuel engines.

Since July 2021 to date, Beihai shipyard and CMB.TECH have signed contracts for the construction of twenty-eight 210,000-ton bulk carriers and five very large crude oil tankers (VLCCs). Among them, seven 210,000-ton bulk carriers were successfully delivered.
