The BorWin gamma topside has completed its journey from Dubai to the installation site in the German North Sea, TenneT reports.

After some delays in the last few kilometers due to the weather, BorWin gamma appeared on the horizon on Sunday afternoon, according to TenneT.

The installation of the topside onto the jacket foundation is expected to start this week.

The BorWin gamma topside left the Drydocks World – Dubai shipyard mid-September.

When operational, the 900MW BorWin3 HVDC platform will convert the alternating current produced by offshore wind turbines to direct current before transmitting it onshore to the German national grid via a 160-kilometre cable link.

The commissioning of the BorWin3 grid connection is expected in 2019.

TenneT ordered the BorWin gamma from a consortium comprising Petrofac and Siemens. Siemens supplied the complete HVDC converter technology and main electrical equipment for direct-current transmission, with Petrofac responsible for the complete engineering, construction and offshore installation of the platform.

Petrofac awarded the contract to Drydocks World for fabrication, commissioning and load-out of the topside in 2014. The platform’s helideck was delivered by Bayards.

The jacket foundation for the BorWin3 platform, fabricated by Heerema Fabrication Group, was installed some 130 kilometres off the German coast in May.
