Mario Mehren has been named President of BASF’s Oil & Gas division effective July 1, 2015, and in this function will be head of BASF’s subsidiary Wintershall.

Mehren is currently a member of the Board of Executive Directors of Wintershall responsible for Exploration & Production Russia, North Africa and South America.

He succeeds Dr. Rainer Seele, who has been named CEO of OMV Aktiengesellschaft, Vienna, Austria, effective July 1, 2015. Seele has been head of Wintershall since 2009.

“Over the past years, Rainer Seele has contributed significantly to expanding and further strengthening the position of Wintershall as the largest internationally operating German oil and gas company. We wish him much success in his new position,” said Dr. Kurt Bock, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE.

After completing a course in business administration at Saarland University in Saarbrücken, Mehren began his professional career in 1998 as specialist adviser in BASF’s Group Accounting section in the Corporate Finance Department. In 2001, Mehren became Head of Finance and Accounting at BASF Schwarzheide, and in 2003 he moved to BASF in Chile to become Managing Director of Finance and Administration.

The Koblenz-born Mehren joined Wintershall in 2006 as Vice President Finance & Information Management in the former “Finance & Russia” Board Department headed by Dr. Ties Tiessen. Mehren is a member of the Supervisory Boards of Russian joint ventures of Wintershall and was involved in the recent expansion of cooperation with Gazprom.
