Wheatstone LNG’s second train 90 pct done

The construction of the second liquefaction train at the Chevron-led Wheatstone LNG project in Western Australia is over 90 percent complete. 

A partner in the project, Woodside, noted that the key priorities for the second train are the completion of final mechanical fit-out and instrumentation and controls pre-commissioning for refrigeration compressors.

First cargo from the second Wheatstone LNG train is expected to ship out in the second quarter of 2018, with the domestic gas production is expected to start in the second half of the year.

The project shipped the first cargo in October and delivered to Japan’s JERA on November 12. A shutdown was carried out in December to clean and replace strainers in LNG Train 1 with the facility restarting on December 27.

At full capacity, the project’s two train LNG facility is expected to contribute around six percent of the Asia Pacific region’s total future LNG production, delivering 8.9 MTPA of LNG for export to customers in Asia.

Wheatstone LNG is a joint venture between Australian units of Chevron (64.14 percent), Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company (13.4 percent), Woodside (13 percent), and Kyushu Electric Power Company (1.46 percent), together with PE Wheatstone, part-owned by JERA (8 percent).
