WEM Sisters Start First Offshore Wind Charters

Operations & Maintenance

Sunderland-based Wind Energy Marine Limited has taken delivery of two wind farm support vessels (WFSVs) which have since started their first offshore wind charters in the German North Sea.

The two 27.5-metre catamarans, WEM 1 and WEM 2, were built by Piriou Vietnam and were delivered to Wind Energy Marine in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Following the delivery, WEM 1 and WEM 2 started their six-month charters on the Nordsee One offshore wind farm. The charters started on 10 June, and the two vessels are being used to transport wind technicians from the O&M base in Norrdeich to the wind farm and back.

WEM 1 and WEM 2 are based on a design by BMT Nigel Gee. They can carry up to 24 technicians and three crew members each, and have the top speed of 27.5 knots. The two vessels also have cargo capacities of 20t and can carry up to three 10-foot containers.

The Nordsee One wind farm is located approximately 40 kilometres north of the Juist Island. The 332MW wind farm comprises 54 Senvion 6.2M126 turbines which have been in commercial operation since December 2017.
