Wave Energy Scotland bags Pelamis’ assets

Authorities & Government

HIE has obtained Pelamis’ assets on behalf of Wave Energy Scotland (WES), a new body established to support Scotland’s wave energy sector, it is stated in the HIE’s press release.

Aside from a range of physical assets previously owned by Pelamis, Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) has agreed with KPMG administrators to acquire intellectual property as well, the press release reads.

This means that the intellectual property that will support the growth and development of wave energy Scotland will not be lost to the international competitors in wave energy market.

Fergus Ewing, Minister for Business, Energy and Tourism of Scotland, said: “Through Wave Energy Scotland, we will now be able to ensure that this hard-won knowledge and expertise continues to be developed here and, crucially, made available to drive future innovation which will maintain Scotland’s position at the global forefront of wave energy.”

After the meeting with industry representatives, where future plans for WES were discussed, Alex Paterson, HIE Chief Executive, commented:

“Acquiring the intellectual property and other assets of Pelamis is an important first step for Wave Energy Scotland. Over the last two months, we’ve brought together staff from HIE, the University of Edinburgh and the Carbon Trust to develop the operating principles and determine the best combination of knowledge, expertise and organisational structure which will make WES an effective force in Scotland.”
