WERPO, an Israeli wave energy player, has designed a wave energy system that harnesses the energy of the waves to produce electricity while being only 10% submerged in the water.

WERPO’s technology, initially developed under SDE Ltd, is based on the utilization of sea waves to yield hydraulic pressure that produces electricity, while exploiting the full potential of wave speed, height, depth, rise and fall, and currents beneath the surface of the water.

According to WERPO, the system is made up of modular components that require little space on land and can be implemented in any terrain easily.

The system is usually stationed on wave breakers, but can be constructed on poles located in the ocean depths as well, with minor alterations.

It can produce energy at wave heights beginning at ~80 cm, and the company said their system produces electricity at cost of $0.05 per kW/h.

As reported earlier, WERPO signed agreements for the construction of wave energy power plants off South AfricaSri LankaGhana and Guinea-Bissau.

In addition to that, the company is in co-operation talks with an unnamed Chinese electrical supplier for the construction of ocean energy project, as well as being in negotiations with Grenada and the Caribbean region for the deployment of its wave energy technology.
