VIDEO: Tidal turbine deployment process

Operations & Maintenance

The video published by SAL Offshore shows the installation of the Voith tidal turbine at EMEC’s tidal test site at the Fall of Warness.

The MV Lone vessel, Equipped with Kongsberg Dynamic Positioning II System, was required for the installation process in order to lift the tidal turbine from its transportation cradle on a barge and place it on the pre-installed foundation.

The turbine has been installed approximately 14 meters below the sea level.

Voith’s HyTide 1000 has a rotor diameter of 13 m, and weighs about 200 tonnes.

The turbine’s capacity is rated at 1 MW at the flow speed of 2.9 m/s.

The test system is mounted on to a monopile drilled into the seabed.

The turbine rests under its own weight on the support structure and is installed and removed with the help of crane ships.

The installation took place in September 2013.
