UK: South Hook LNG Receives First Commercial Cargo from RasGas

Today sees the completion of unloading and safe departure at the South Hook LNG Terminal of the first commercial cargo purchased by South Hook Gas from RasGas of Qatar.

The Milaha Ras Laffan berthed yesterday and is discharging 2,950,000 MMBtu of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for supply to the UK natural gas market.

Fahad Al-Subaiey, South Hook Gas Chairman said, “South Hook Gas now supplies more gas into the UK than any other LNG shipper and this agreement with RasGas gives us the opportunity to receive additional cargoes in future, helping to improve supply diversity.

This agreement marks the latest addition to RasGas’ growing portfolio in the European market. As Europe continues to work towards meeting CO2 emissions targets whilst meeting energy needs, we are seeing more interest in LNG as a clean fuel,” said Khalid Sultan R Al-Kuwari, Marketing and Shipping Executive at RasGas.

South Hook Gas has supplied gas every day into the UK market since commencing operations in 2010, helping to improve security of supply. In little more than two years, the company has grown rapidly and can supply around 20% of the UK’s gas needs.

LNG is a flexible and safe energy source that can provide reliable back-up to intermittent renewable energy supplies such as wind and solar. As one of the cleanest burning hydrocarbons, it can also help the UK to achieve its greenhouse gas emissions targets as it has lower emissions than both coal and oil.
