UK: ICoTA Presents Schlumberger with Coveted Innovation Award

Business & Finance

Leading oil and gas body the Intervention & Coiled Tubing Association (ICoTA) has presented its sought-after European Chapter Innovation Award to Schlumberger Slickline’s global perforating and remedial services domain champion, Matthew Billingham, in recognition of the company’s application of technical innovation in well intervention.

Picking up the trophy at the SPE/ICoTA European Well Intervention conference in Aberdeen, the company was acknowledged for its LIVE Digital Slickline Service, technology that is providing operators with multiple benefits and increased operational capabilities.

At the core of Schlumberger’s system is a slickline cable engineered to deliver two-way digital communication. Coupled with an extensive suite of purpose-built, downhole modules, the LIVE technology enables tool and well information, such as head tension, tool deviation, and shock, plus gamma ray, CCL, pressure and temperature to be measured and transmitted to the surface in real time, greatly enhancing and expanding slickline operational capabilities.

In excess of 500 field operations have been performed to date across North America, Europe, Africa and Asia, with the system implemented in a wide range of well types, fluids and deviations, including borehole temperatures up to 275 degrees Fahrenheit, pressures up to 8000 psi and depths down to 16,000 feet.

Mr Billingham, said: “This system enables oil and gas producers to manage well intervention and workover programs with increased knowledge, accuracy and certainty when running slickline, while additional tools help to deliver an increased level of quality, safety and efficiency.

“The benefits of the system are already being enjoyed by the industry, with a client working onshore Europe able to perform all operations with just one unit and one crew, enabling them to halve their previous manpower requirements, resulting in time saving and operational risk elimination.”

ICoTA Europe chairman, Rob Grassick, said: “On behalf of ICoTA Europe, I would like to congratulate Schlumberger for this award win. We are always very proud to present this award to those who represent the innovation, creativity, enthusiasm that makes our industry so exciting to work in.

“The commitment and expertise we saw across all entries should be commended and the success of Schlumberger in pushing forward the boundaries of well intervention and coiled tubing technology will be recognised, both by ICoTA internationally, and across the wider industry.”
