Five tidal energy players have been awarded for their efforts in advancing the tidal energy sector at the International Tidal Energy Summit (ITES) 2016 last night.

Over 150 people attended the ITES Awards Dinner last night, November 23, in London, where several top tidal energy players received recognition for their contribution to the development of tidal energy sector.

Scotrenewables Tidal Power won the ‘Best Grid Connected Prototype’ award for its commercial-scale floating tidal turbine, the SR2000.

Andrew Scott, Scotrenewables’ CEO, said: “On behalf of the whole team I’m delighted with this recognition. The SR2000 has been a leap forward for the technology and presented a huge challenge for the team, and it’s a measure to them individually and collectively that we’re on the road to demonstrating some of the clear advantages our technology brings to the tidal sector at full scale.”

Minesto scooped the award for the ‘Most Promising Turbine Concept’ for its Deep Green technology.

Martin Edlund, CEO of Minesto, said: “We are very pleased and proud to receive the award as the industry’s most promising technology. Not least because there is an international audience, consisting of the industry’s own players, as this shows that they see both the viability and potential of our unique technology.”

The award recognizing the ‘Most Valuable Consultant’ was given to Marine Energy Wales, the newly established Welsh marine industry body stemming from Marine Energy Pembrokeshire (MEP).

David Jones, Director of MEP, said: “We are delighted that MEP’s work has been recognised on an International level. Since developing Marine Energy Pembrokeshire in 2009 we have witnessed interest in Wales grow substantially. We are committed to continuing with our collaborative approach, supporting the development of Wales’ Demonstration Zones and encouraging the continued growth of the sector.”

Sustainable Marine Energy won in the category of the ‘Most Promising New Tool’, while Green Marine took home the award for ‘Excellence in Project Support’.

ITES 2016 is taking place in London, from November 22-23, 2016.
