Top Carriers More Reliable in Q2

Global schedule reliability improved 2.3 percentage points to 74.6% in the second quarter of 2017, from 72.3% in reported in the previous quarter, according to market intelligence provider SeaIntel informed.

Although the score increased on a quarterly level, it dropped by 10.4 percentage points on a year-on-year level from 85% recorded in the second quarter of 2016.

In the second quarter of 2017, fifteen of the top eighteen carriers saw a quarterly improvement in their reliability scores, while only Pacific International Lines (PIL), Taiwan’s Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation (Yang Ming), and German Hamburg Süd saw their scores drop.

Taiwan’s shipping company Wan Hai Lines was the most reliable top-18 carrier with a schedule reliability score of 79.7% in the second quarter of the year. Hamburg Süd was the second most reliable carrier with 78.6%, followed by Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and Evergreen with 77.4% and 77%, respectively.

The biggest year-on-year decreases in schedule reliability were recorded by PIL, Japan’s Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), and Yang Ming, with drops of 13.8, 13.6, and 12.2 percentage points, respectively.

According to SeaIntel’s report, schedule reliability in Asia-USWC reached 76.5% in the second quarter of 2017, improving by 17.7 percentage points when compared on a quarterly basis, but declined 7.1 percentage points compared to the 83.6% seen in same three-month period in 2016. Niche carriers Matson and Westwood Shipping, and Evergreen were the top performing carriers in 2017-Q2 with reliability scores of 100%, 87.9% and 84.2%, respectively.

In Asia-USEC on-time performance increased from 57.3% to 72.4% on a quarterly basis, but deteriorated by 11.4 percentage points on a year-on-year level. In the trade lane, Maersk Line, MSC, and Hamburg Sud were the most reliable carriers, reaching 85.6%, 85.6% and 81%.

On-time performance in Asia-North Europe reversed its downwards trajectory and improved 11.4 percentage points to 75.1%, yet it was still 6.8 percentage points below the level of last year. The most reliable carriers were Evergreen, COSCO, and MSC reaching 82.2%, 82.2%, and 78.8% respectively.

In 2017-Q2, schedule reliability in Asia-Mediterranean increased to 72.1%, which corresponds to a Q/Q improvement of 11.6 percentage points, experiencing a significant decline of 13.9 percentage points Y/Y. ZIM, ANL, and COSCO were the most reliable carriers with reliability scores of 84.0%, 78.8% and 76.0%, respectively.
