Tennet Starts Nordergründe Cable Laying Ops

Business & Finance

Electricity transmission system operator, Tennet, has begun subsea cable installation works of the grid connection project Nordergründe.

Nordergründe is TenneT’s third offshore grid connection in the twelve sea mile zone in Lower Saxony. As it is only 30 km away from the coast the most efficient connection method is via AC cables.

On May 3, the cable was pulled into the empty tube below the dyke near Hooksiel, after which the cable laying ops started and are still on-going.

The cable is being laid with a 16 metre high and 80 t heavy jetting sled.

The 4km land cable was laid in 2012 and lead to the substation near Inhausen which was prepared accordingly in 2013.

The subsea cable has a length of 28 km. As the substation of the wind farm Nordergründe has not been erected yet, the last part of the subsea cable will be stored on the sea bed in the wind farm area, approximately 15 km east of the island of Wangerooge.

Once the wind farm substation is completed, the cable will be connected to the substation and the grid connection can be put into operation.

TenneT plans to take the grid connection into operation this year . It will have a capacity of 111 MW.
