Ten Crew Missing after Ship Sinks off Shanghai

China has launched a search and rescue mission for ten seafarers who remain missing after their ship sank off the coast of Shanghai.

The ship Changping sank in the anchorage near Yangtze estuary after it collided with another freighter in the evening hours of January 2.

Three crewmembers, out of a total of 13 who were aboard the vessel, were rescued, Xinhua News Agency cited the country’s maritime search and rescue center.

The rescue operation, which includes over a dozen of boats, was ongoing as of the morning hours of January 3.

At the time of the incident, Changping was loaded with 5,000 tonnes of steel.
