Tekmar Enters Asian Offshore Wind Market through Formosa 1

Business & Finance

UK-based Tekmar Energy has supplied its TEKLINK Cable Protection System (CPS) to protect the underwater power cables as they enter the wind turbine foundations on the Formosa 1 Phase 1 project, the first offshore wind farm in Taiwan.

Formosa 1 Phase 1 consists of two 4MW Siemens turbines located in the Miaoli region of Taiwan and is the first phase of the Formosa 1 offshore wind farm project. In Phase 2, a further 120MW of capacity is planned to be constructed during 2019, subject to final investment decision.

Jack Simpson, Head of Offshore Wind Sales at Tekmar said: “The Formosa 1 project, although small, is particularly significant for Tekmar as it marks our entry into the Asian Offshore Windfarm market. Having supplied our systems for over 10 years into Europe on 47 wind farms, we hope to offer our valuable lessons learned and market leading experience to support the newer Asian market in the same way we have in Europe.”

Local installation contractor Woen Jinn Harbour were appointed to carry out installation of the power cables and CPS which took place in October 2016.

Woen Jinn Harbour’s Cheng Yu Lee said: “With more than 30 years’ experience of cable installation in Taiwan, it was our first time working with Tekmar, and their cable protection systems, however the Tekmar team were very supportive and the offshore installation campaign was very successful.”
