Taiwan’s Jan-Aug LNG imports up 12.2 pct

Taiwan imported 11.08 million mt of LNG in the first eight months of this year, up 12.2% from the same period a year before, according to the customs data.

Qatar, the world’s largest LNG exporter remained the biggest supplier of the fuel to Taiwan in the period under review, however, Qatari volumes dropped almost 22.8% on year.

LNG supplies coming from the port of Ras Laffan in Qatar to Taiwan totaled 3.53 million mt in the January-August period versus 4.58 million mt last year, the data by the Directorate General of Customs shows.

Malaysia was the second-biggest supplier of LNG to Taiwan with 1.89 million mt, followed by Indonesia with 1.50 million mt and Papua New Guinea that supplied 1.26 million mt of the chilled fuel to Taiwan in the mentioned period.

The rest of the LNG imports came from Russia, Australia, Nigeria, Brunei, Oman, Trinidad and Tobago, US, Algeria, UAE and Peru.

Taiwan, the world’s fifth largest LNG buyer, paid about $4.23 billion for these LNG imports as compared to $3.12 billion last year, according to the data.

The country currently imports LNG via two regasification terminals, located in the central and southern parts of the island.

Taiwan plans to build another terminal in the north of the island by 2025.
