Swedish marine energy developer strikes new deals in Faroe Islands

Project & Tenders

Swedish marine energy developer Minesto has landed a framework agreement for onshore engineering services in the Faroe Islands to support the operation and maintenance of its Deep Green technology.

Minesto will be installing tidal energy devices in the waters surrounding the Faroe Islands, initially in Vestmannasund with further installations planned in other locations.

To that end, Minesto will require facilities and services in the Faroe Islands in order to support these activities.

Following a tender procedure launched earlier this year, Minesto has selected two Faroese firms to deliver onshore engineering as well as workshop and storage services.

Namely, MEST Shipyard and SJH Commercial Divers have secured framework agreements under the tender divided into two lots.

MEST is the biggest shipyard in the Faroe Islands with two locations, one in Tórshavn and one at Skála.

The company has built and repaired vessels since 1936 and is today a modern and efficient shipyard with approximately 200 employees.

Since 1997, SJH Commercial Divers has been involved in the diving sector, land transport, transport of funds and other construction activities.

The tender sees the framework deal valid for 2 years, with possibility to extend it two more years.

Under the agreement, contractors will provide onshore operational support in the Faroe Islands and assist with the development of low flow tidal energy projects.

The services required under this framework agreement include engineering support, manpower, cranes, material handling, transport and tools.

Furthermore, the deal under the second lot will see the provision of a workshop to facilitate the maintenance and repair of Minesto assets and an outdoor storage and indoor storage area.

Go-ahead for Faroe Islands tidal installations

Minesto, along with its partner SEV, has secured all necessary permits and consents for the installation of two grid-connected tidal kite systems in Vestmannasund, Faroe Islands.

The granted permits and consents cover two of Minesto-s DG100 tidal kites.

Minesto has secured public funding totaling approximately €3.5 million through the EU’s EIC Accelerator and the Swedish Energy Agency for the implementation of the Vestmannasund project.

Also, Minesto has set up a Faroese subsidiary which will facilitate and further develop ongoing and future installations of the company’s marine energy converters in the Faroe Islands.
