Strike at Hanjin’s Subic Yard in the Cards?

Business & Finance

A strike seems to be looming at Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Philippines (HHIC-Phil) amid workers’ demand for the recognition of their union.

Namely, the workers are demanding for their union to be certified through an election so as to be able to negotiate a Collective Bargaining Agreement with the shipbuilder’s management, the Manila Times reports.

These are said to include over 30,000 workers spread over 18 subcontractors.

According to Alyansa ng Manggagawang Pilipinong Organisado–Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (AMAPO-TUCP) head Roberto Flores, cited by the daily, a strike notice has already been filed.

Further talks with the management on the issue are set to take place this week, after which more details on the potential strike are expected to be announced.
