Star Bulk to Explore Renewable Energy for Its Bulkers

Greek dry bulk shipping company Star Bulk and Japan-based Eco Marine Power (EMP) have agreed to jointly study the feasibility of installing renewable energy technologies onto existing and new ships.

Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the parties would launch a joint study covering engineering issues related to how various equipment, including solar panels, batteries and other devices, can be installed on existing and new bulk carriers.

The study will also estimate the amount of power that can be provided via renewable energy along selected routes and for specific ship types. Fuel Oil Consumption (FOC) and emissions savings will also be calculated and issues related to safety and ship operations such as cargo handling will be considered.

The joint study project between Star Bulk and EMP is scheduled to be conducted over a period of two years.
