Spanish LNG imports spike in October

Spain’s imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) rose by 45.5 percent in October on a yearly basis boosted by higher gas-to-power generation.

LNG imports reached 17.08 terawatt hours (TWh) in October as compared to 11.74 TWh in the same month the year before, according to the data provided by the LNG terminal operator, Enagás.

Breaking down the LNG imports by countries, Nigeria was the biggest supplier to Spain but these volumes dropped 28 percent on year to about 3.69 TWh.

On the other side, volumes from Nigeria spiked 253.7 percent on year to 3.52 TWh while volumes from Peru dropped 4.2 percent to 2.78 TWh.

The rest of the October imports came from Trinidad, Qatar, Norway and Angola.

Enagás’ Barcelona regasification plant received 8 out of the total 22 LNG cargoes imported into Spain during the month under review.

The Huelva LNG import terminal received 6 shipments while the Bilbao LNG terminal received 4 cargoes and Cartagena 3.

The Mugardos facility received 1 shipment in October but it also reloaded one small cargo of 23 GWh, the report shows.

The Cartagena plant also reloaded one cargo equal to about 0.98 TWh during October.

Both conventional gas demand and gas-to-power demand in Spain rose in the month under review.

Enagás recently said that gas demand for power generation ended October with a rise of 19 percent to 8.6 TWh while conventional demand hit a record high to exceed 20.6 TWh.
