South Korea’s Samsung Heavy nets Celsius LNG duo order

South Korean shipbuilding giant Samsung Heavy Industries said Tuesday it won a new order to build two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.

Samsung will build the 419 billion won ($376m) worth LNG tankers for Copenhagen-based Celsius Tankers.

The shipbuilder said it would deliver the 180,000-cbm vessels by August 2021.

This is the second LNG duo order for Celsius at Samsung Heavy. To remind, the Danish owner ordered two carriers back in August 2018, marking its first entry into the world of LNG shipping.

The new LNG carrier duo will be fitted with SHI’s developed eco-friendly and Smart ship technologies: SAVER Air and INTELLIMAN Ship.

“This will help to respond to the upcoming environmental regulations and significantly increase energy saving, thereby further increasing the operational efficiency of vessels,” SHI said.

The technology is expected to save 5 percent on fuel irrespective of the external environment such as waves and current, which will add up to a year’s fuel cost if the ship runs 20 years, it said.

This year, SHI has set a $7.8 billion target for new orders, up 24 percent over the last year’s orders as the new building market is picking up all over the world, particularly for LNG ships and container ships.
