Shetland tidal array moves forward

Nova Innovation, a UK-based tidal energy developer, has moved to the preparation and deployment of the offshore components for the Shetland Tidal Array project in Bluemull Sound, Scotland.

According to Nova Innovation, all onshore works for the project have been completed in August.

The assembly and testing of the first of three Nova M100 tidal turbines has been completed early in September. The turbine was then prepared for subsea deployment, which will be conducted in phases as the weather permits.

Both the substructure and ballast were deployed to within a few feet of the planned location at the seabed lease area, following the completion of the environmental surveys. End of September saw the completion of the subsea cable and onshore connection.

The company plans to complete the deployment operations in October, subject to suitable weather conditions.

The Shetland tidal array will consist of five 100 kW tidal turbines, and is expected to power 300 homes.
