After the completion of all land reclamation operations, the sheet piling works at Velana International Airport officially started yesterday, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) said in its latest announcement.

Approximately 3,300 meters of sheet piling works at the north east lagoon area will be laid to protect the 650,000 square meters of land for the development of the new runway.

The contractor for this project is Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) and Gulf Cobla Tennssor Maldives. It is scheduled that this work will be wrapped up within the next 5 months, said MACL.

The reclamation of 3.2 hectares of land for the new terminal ended in June 2017.

The new terminal along with a new runway, both being built by BUCG, are set to be completed by mid-2018.
