Second hybrid Lake Vanern Max vessel handed over to Erik Thun

MV Spiken, the second plug-in hybrid dry cargo vessel in the next-generation Lake Vanern Max series, has been delivered to Swedish shipping company Erik Thun.

The newbuild was delivered to Erik Thun on December 9, 2024, and set sail to Germany for its first loading.

Spiken is the second of six vessels ordered in the Lake Vanern Max series from Ferus Smit shipyard in the Netherlands.

The vessels will run on a hybrid propulsion system, using both battery power and traditional fuel to optimize energy use and reduce emissions.

As explained, the design focuses on maximizing cargo capacity, enabling the shipowner to handle more cargo within restricted waterways like Lake Vanern. The optimized bow design also allows the vessel to carry significantly more cargo with lower energy consumption.

The newbuilds also come with a shore connection capability for silent and emission-free operations while docked, improving air quality and reducing noise pollution.

The first vessel, Lidan, was delivered to Eirk Thun on October 2, 2024.
