SAFEEN Group, a maritime services provider and part of the UAE-based AD Ports Group, in collaboration with Dutch major Damen Shipyards, has achieved a Guinness World Records title for the most powerful electric tugboat.

As disclosed, the record, which was accomplished at AD Ports Group’s Khalifa Port and announced during the energy event ADIPEC, was set by measuring the tug’s high peak value strength by bollard pull.

With an average high peak pull of 78.2 tonnes, the achievement marks a global milestone, AD Ports Group said, noting that this all-electric harbor tug contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of marine activities thanks to its zero emissions from “Tank to Propeller” and offers a cost-effective alternative to diesel-powered vessels due to lower maintenance expenditure.

Ammar Mubarak Al Shaiba, CEO – Maritime & Shipping Cluster, AD Ports Group, commented: “This Guinness World Record™️ achievement demonstrates that the transition to alternative energy does not come at the cost of performance. We are very proud that the first electric tug in the Middle East is also making waves on a global level with this accolade and the fact that in parallel it is improving the sustainability of our operations alongside cost efficiencies in terms of overall fuel saving is extremely important. This vessel is now a key component of our Marine Services fleet and our electrification strategy.”

Arnout Damen, CEO of Damen Shipyards Group, stated: “Damen is incredibly proud to partner with SAFEEN Group on this electric tug project driving us towards a more sustainable marine industry. This collaboration aligns perfectly with our shared vision for the future of maritime innovation.”

Following a trial period at Khalifa Port, the tug is now in service on a permanent basis. Currently being used with an advanced electric hybrid battery system, planned shore power installation will further boost its green capabilities, AD Ports Group claimed.

To remind, SAFEEN Group and Damen Shipyards signed an agreement for the lease and purchase of the all-electric tug at the beginning of 2024.

At the time, Al Shaiba expressed pride to have the first electric tug in the Middle East join the company’s fleet, adding: “Implementing electric tugs into our operations aligns with our local and global and local ambitions for greener maritime operations. AD Ports Group’s commitment to a sustainable future is underscored by adopting such technologies, contributing to the overall reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector.”
