SAAM Terminals: Emissions down by over 10,500 tons CO2 in 2023

Port terminal operator SAAM Terminals has disclosed that it reduced emissions by over 10,500 tons last year.

The San Antonio, Antofagasta, San Vicente and Corral terminals and the Puerto Montt logistics center reduced their carbon footprint by 41% compared to 2021 by using renewable energies for 100% of their electricity consumption.

As a result, they prevented 10,522 tons of CO2 from being emitted, equivalent to the emissions of 2,290 average automobiles, according to the port operator.

The company’s port terminals and logistics center received I-REC certificates verifying use of renewable energy for 100% of their electricity consumption.

I-REC certificates are an international mechanism used to promote and verify the use of renewable energy.

Specifically, these certificates are issued by the International REC Standard, an organization that establishes global standards for monitoring, issuing and trading REC certificates.

During 2023, SAAM Terminals’ operations were powered by energy from Enel’s Rapel hydroelectric power plant, one of Chile’s main hydroelectric plants.

Inaugurated in 1968, it has been a mainstay in the supply of clean, renewable energy for more than five decades, SAAM Terminals noted.

“An important part of our sustainability strategy is to move forward towards more eco-friendly operations. Year after year we strive to improve our processes: powering our operations with renewable energy certified with I-RECs is proof of that commitment,” said SAAM Terminals’ VP of Sustainability and Communications, Cristina Schmidt.

Recently, SAAm Terminals concluded a collaboration agreement with NextPort, the technology subsidiary of Moffatt & Nichol, to implement the latter’s new platform that combines DigitalTwin and Artificial Intelligence technologies.

The solution provides a digital replica of the port’s physical assets, processes and systems that is created from real-time data collected from sensors and other Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, and used to analyze, predict and optimize the port’s performance.
