Russia: USC and Rosatom to Sign Construction Contract for New Icebreakers Next Month

The contract for the construction of diesel-powered icebreakers should be signed in December of 2011, Transport Ministry official said on Wednesday. This contract is going to be signed between United Shipbuilding Corporation and Rosatom Corp., Deputy Transport Minister Viktor Olersky said in an interview with journalists.

The Russian Ministry of Transport is ordering four new icebreakers worth a total of 79 billion RUB. According to the Government official, three of the icebreakers will have a price tag of 18 billion RUB (USD 602.01 million) each, while the fourth will cost 25 billion RUB (USD 836.12500 million). In addition to the four vessels included in the contract, another two icebreakers are expected to be built over the next years.

USC is expected to provide a list of its shipbuilding yards that will be performing the orders. The Government official noted that the Ministry considers Baltic Shipyard as a privileged contractor.

Construction of the vessels is due to start in 2012.
