Houston-headquartered ProSep, the oil, gas and water treatment specialist, has launched an Industry Technology Facilitator (ITF) joint industry project (JIP) with Qatar Petroleum and Petroleum Development Oman.

The 12 month project, which started in December 2014, will see ProSep work collaboratively with both parties in the Middle East to develop an offshore capable unit for oil-in-water removal and media regeneration using ProSep’s Osorb Media produced water treatment technology.

According to ProSep, the Osorb Media technology adsorbs free, dispersed, and water soluble hydrocarbons, as well as many oilfield chemicals from produced water. ProSep will evaluate Osorb Media’s performance over repeated capture and regeneration cycles on customer-specified water streams. The JIP will culminate with the integration of a commercial unit into the target process stream for extended trialling. The unit will be in commission for a period of three months, with the objective of full technology adoption into the field thereafter.

“This project marks the first truly collaborative ITF-sponsored JIP between two national oil companies in the Middle East,” comments Patrick O’Brien, Chief Executive, ITF. “We are delighted to facilitate this collaborative technology development in the Gulf Cooperation Council and look forward to seeing the results that ProSep achieves.”

Ryan McPherson, General Manager, Middle East for ProSep, adds: “Our Osorb® Media technology offers significant benefits to operators for the treatment of produced water for reinjection or discharge.”

Preliminary media testing has already started, with the next steering group meeting set to take place in March 2015 in Doha, Qatar. The JIP is still open for late participants through ITF.
