PLOCAN trials Fraunhofer-IOSB new AUV

Research & Development

German-based Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation (IOSB) tested the DeDaVe, a new autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), at the PLOCAN test site.

The main objective of the trials was to validate the features and capabilities of the new deep diving autonomous underwater vehicle (DeDaVE) device in deep water, ahead of its commercialisation.

The testing was conducted at PLOCAN’s land-based facilities and in the PLOCAN test site off the coast of Telde, Canary Islands.

The prototype AUV is able to dive and operate completely autonomously down to 6,000 metres depth.

It is also capable of carrying a diverse payload of sensors and measurement instruments suitable for tackling various types of mission in the fields of oceanography, hydrography, geophysics, and search and location, among other important applications.

AUVs are attractive to the offshore oil and gas industry to find new resource locations, as well as ocean mining and renewable energy generation projects.

PLOCAN (Oceanic Platform of the Canary Islands) is a research facility co-funded by the Economy and Competitiveness Ministry of the Spanish government and the Canary Islands government, with the aim of supporting the research and development in the fields of ocean science and technology.

The IOSB researches and develops innovative concepts, methods and systems for industry, medium-sized business and clients from the public sector.
