Plans for Submarine Cable Linking Mtunzini to Cape Town Announced

IDC and the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) have recently provided funding for the construction of submarine cable linking Mtunzini, Cape Town, East London and Port Elizabeth, telecommunication provider Techteledata announced.

According to MyBroadband, Techteledata’s managing director and founder Musa Phungula explained that the advantages of the cable system include lower latency and lower maintenance costs when compared to terrestrial cable systems.

The company is also planning to construct two 6,000 square meter data centres at Mtunzini and Yzerfontein.

The total project budget is around $100 million (R893 million) and the project is expected to be launched in July 2013.

Mr. Phungula also added that the company is welcoming potential investors to join the project.
