Petronas partners up with Gas4Sea to promote LNG as fuel

Malaysian energy giant Petronas signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Gas4Sea partnership to promote LNG as the preferred marine fuel. 

The deal with the partnership, comprising Engie, Mitsubishi Corporation and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), was signed by Petronas’ unit Petronas LNG and its shipping affiliate MISC.

Gas4Sea is a partnership created to jointly promote LNG as the cleaner maritime fuel, by providing LNG bunkering services in the global market.

Under the terms of the MoU, the parties will explore ways to collaborate and identify potential business opportunities in relation to LNG bunkering.

Commenting on the MoU, Petronas LNG chief marketing officer and CEO, Ezhar Yazid Jafaar said that the collaboration is expected to enhance Petronas’ presence in the integrated LNG value chain and diversified LNG market portfolio.

He added that the company is “looking at ways to further promote the consumption of LNG beyond the existing markets portfolios, and advocating LNG as marine fuel is a new frontier for the LNG sector.”

Gas4Sea already deployed its LNG bunkering vessel the Engie Zeebrugge, in the port of Zeebrugge, a major piece of the LNG bunkering value chain.

Ezhar added that the cooperation will support the usage of LNG as a fuel of choice for maritime activities.
