OSIL equips Seacams2 for tidal turbulence study

Ocean Scientific International (OSIL) has shipped a network of 3 data buoys to Bangor University’s School of Ocean Sciences that will be used to study tidal turbulence at the Menai Strait in Wales.

The 1.9-meter buoys will serve as data collection platforms for ADCP instruments measuring currents and waves on the seabed that will transfer their data to the buoy via omnidirectional acoustic modems, OSIL informed.

The buoys will then transmit the data to the project base station as part of the Seacams2 project to assist the development of marine renewable energy in Wales.

The Seacams2 project is run as a partnership between Bangor and Swansea universities, and is funded in part by the European Regional Development Fund.

The project, running until July 2019, is expected to boost investment in renewable energy and sustainable resource sectors by facilitating the translation of research to business activity, meeting demand for coordinated information, data and modelling of coastal and marine processes.
