Ongoing perforation ops at Black Sea field fuel hopes of higher gas flow rates offshore Türkiye

Encouraged by the current results of its well intervention program, which is underway off the coast of Türkiye, Canada’s oil and gas player Trillion Energy is anticipating an increase in gas flow rates from the wells at its natural gas field in the Black Sea.

Trillion Energy embarked on a new stage of well intervention work at its SASB natural gas field on June 28, 2024, covering the Akçakoca platform’s Guluc-2South Akcakoca-2West Akcakoca-1, and Akcakoca-3 wells, previously drilled using the Uranus jack-up rig.

As the South Akcakoca-2 well was perforated over multiple intervals for 6.4 meters, the Canadian firm elaborated that the well hole pressure (WHP), which was 86 psi before perforation, increased to 1,046 psi. The well, which flowed continuously from the morning of July 9, reached a flow rate of 0.70 MMcf/d with a WHP of 140 psi by the July 10 afternoon.

This changed in the following days, as the July 12 flow rate was 1.2 MMcf/d with a WHP of 156 psi; the July 14 flow rate was 1.88 MMcf/d with a WHP of 312 psi; and the last data point on July 15 showed the flow rate was 2.88 MMcf/d with a WHP of 318 psi.

According to the company, the South Akcakoca-2 well will continue to be monitored until it reaches a stable rate, as the production characteristics indicate that perforating the new zones blew the water out of the well and the reservoirs that were water blocked are cleaning up and producing gas.

Arthur Halleran, CEO of Trillion, commented: “The fantastic response of South Akcakoca-2 once the water was lift off the perforations indicates that the reservoirs will produce the gas they contain once the water loading is removed.

On the other hand, the Guluc-2 well was also perforated over several intervals for a total of 7.7 meters, leading to the WHP increase from 650 psi to 1,243 psi before settling to 1,098 psi. While the well will flow to clean the water and perforation debris out and be capable of gas production, it will then be shut in while South Akcakoca-2 well gas production stabilizes.

Furthermore, the Canadian firm highlights that the boost in the WHP during perforation indicates gas flowed into the borehole from the new perforated zones, thus, the updated flow rates will be established later due to the ongoing testing of South Akcakoca-2. Once the company’s ongoing perforation operation on the West Akcakoca-1 well is completed, the remaining pay in the Akcakoca-3 well will be perforated.

The wells are going to be perforated and monitored during clean up to evaluate the reservoirs response. The next phase of this project is to install the smaller production tubing (2 3/8”) to allow the wells to produce for a few years before water loading occurs again,” added Halleran.

Following the announcement to add three sidetrack wells to the drilling program for the SASB development, Trillion’s total number of wells rose to 20. Since the Canadian player intends to drill five new sidetracked production wells from existing platforms at the field this year, the number of producing wells is set to reach 11.
