Oceantec wave energy converter is en route to the Biscay Marine Energy Platform (bimep) for the upcoming testing campaign.

Following the completion of the assembly works at Navacel facility in Erandio, the device, constructed by the Spanish wave energy developer Oceantec Energías Marinas, has started its journey to bimep open-sea testing site, off the coast of Armintza, where it will be tested as part of the EU-funded OPERA project.

The shared mooring, conventional tether and umbilical cable have already been installed at the site ahead of deployment.

The moorings were provided by Global Maritime, while the Cohort subsidiary, SEA, conducted the installation of the 13.2kV cable, connecting the wave site with the shore.

Oceantec WEC prototype is a point absorber oscillating water column (OWC), shaped like a giant buoy with 5 m in diameter, 40 m height and weight of around 70 tonnes.

Project OPERA (Open Sea Wave Operating Experience to Reduce Energy Cost), coordinated by Tecnalia and Ente Vasco de la Energía (EVE), involves the consortium of 12 members working together to halve the cost of wave energy.
