A cable-laying vessel (CLV), which Norway’s ship designer and shipbuilder VARD is constructing for Denmark’s subsea specialist NCT Offshore, has come to Norwegian waters.

While announcing that it has reached “another milestone”, VARD confirmed the new build (NB) 962, also known as Freja, arrived in Norway’s Vard Langsten on August 23.

The Norwegian shipbuilder’s Vard Design segment in Norway was responsible for the ship’s design. On the other hand, Vard Tulcea in Romania handled the hull-building task, following NCT’s order for a 95-meter-long CLV in early 2023.

As the vessel, launched last month at Vard Shipyards in Tulcea, has now made its way to Norway from Romania, it will undergo the final outfitting and commissioning before being delivered to NCT, which is expected to happen at the end of 2024.

Based on a VARD 9 01 design, the 95-meter cable-laying vessel has a beam of 21,5 meters and will sport two carousels for cable laying with a capacity of 2,500 and 1,750 tones, respectively. This CLV will be fitted with a hybrid battery package.

With single-cabin accommodation for 60 persons, the diesel-electric DP2 ship is envisioned to have an innovative walk-to-work system.

Cable layer comes to Norway

This is not the only new subsea vessel that VARD has been working on, as illustrated by the arrival of Prysmian’s CLV Monna Lisa at Vard’s shipyard in Norway from Romania, with outfitting completion, installation of main mission equipment and trials said to be on schedule.
