Neptune wave energy device ready for launch off BC

Business & Finance

Canadian wave energy company, Mermaid Power, will launch its wave energy device Neptune 3 tomorrow, off Vancouver, British Columbia.

Following the upcoming launch on September 21, the 20,000 kg unit will be lifted by crane into the water and towed to its deployment and test site on the south side of Keats Island.

Testing will determine the efficiency of the machine to convert wave power into electricity.

Neptune 3 is set to produce up to 6kW per hour for testing purposes in Georgia Strait waves and a slightly larger machine, to be deployed off Vancouver Island, is expected to produce 50 to 100kW, according to Mermaid Power.

The electricity generated will be fed into the BC Hydro grid under the net metering program.
