MSC and Alfa Laval Go Exclusive

Business & Finance

The second largest container line, the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), has chosen Swedish engineering company Alfa Laval to be its preferred supplier of ballast water treatment systems.

The agreement is expected to generate orders worth approximately SEK 230 million (USD 28 million) until July 2016. Some SEK 125 million worth of orders are anticipated to be booked this year.

Under the agreement the Alfa Laval PureBallast systems, developed in cooperation with Wallenius Water, will be retrofitted on MSC’s container vessels.

”This is an exciting opportunity to further strengthen our relationship with a leading company in the marine industry,” said Lars Renström, President and CEO of the Alfa Laval Group. ”It is also a clear sign that the retrofit market is starting to open up.”

The Ballast Water Management Convention will enter into force one year after being ratified by 30 states, representing 35 percent of the world’s tonnage. Today 44 states have ratified the Convention, representing 32.86 percent of the world’s tonnage.
