MPL awards FEED for its LNG project in Mexico

Mexico Pacific Limited, a North American LNG export project based on the West Coast of Mexico, has awarded a front end engineering design (FEED) contract to Technip USA.

The company noted that the FEED award marks one of the final milestones to moving the project into construction and operation.

Upon its completion, MPL’s West Coast LNG export facility in North America will provide its partners in Asia with lower-cost LNG, geographic diversity and supply chain resiliency.

“The combination of the shorter shipping distance to Asia from its west coast location and its access to low-cost US gas allows the project to deliver some of the lowest landed cost LNG into Asia,” MPL said in its statement.

Douglas Shanda, president and chief executive officer of MPL said, “With major permits in hand and the FEED award completed, MPL is on track to take FID.”

Shanda added that the company is aiming to continue building momentum as it works toward taking FID in early 2021 and bringing the facility into service in 2024.

MPL is developing the project on the west coast of Mexico in Puerto Libertad in Sonoma, with an aim to connect the Permian gas basin in the United States to the Asian markets.

The facility will be using equipment supplied by Baker Hughes and will be capable of producing 12 million tons of LNG per year at full buildout.
