World’s largest tidal turbine launched in Belfast

Orkney-based Scotrenewables Tidal Power has launched its 2MW SR2000, the world’s largest energy generating floating tidal turbine, at Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast in May 2016. The turbine has subsequently been deployed at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC).

CorPower’s half-scale wave energy device unveiling

CorPower Ocean, a wave energy developer from Sweden, has presented its newly-built half-scale wave energy device in Portugal in September. CorPower’s half-scale device is currently under dry-testing in Stockholm, which will be followed by deployment in real-sea conditions at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC).

Sabella retrieves D10 tidal turbine

French tidal energy developer, Sabella, has retrieved its D10 tidal turbine from the bottom of the Fromveur Strait, off Ushant island, France in July, 2016. The 1 MW turbine, with a rotor diameter of 10 m and height of 17 m, weighing around 450 tonnes, was deployed in June a year earlier.

Seapower wave energy device deployed in Foynes Port

Seapower conducted wet tests on its 1:4 scale wave energy device at the Foynes Port, Ireland, back in July. The device has since been towed out and deployed for testing purposes at the Galway Bay Marine and Renewable Energy Test Site.

EWP’s Gibraltar wave power station comes online

Eco Wave Power (EWP), an Israeli wave energy developer, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony late in May 2016 marking the start of operation of the wave energy plant in Gibraltar. The expansion of EWP’s power plant from 100kW to 1MW-5 MW is currently in the design phase and will feature the largest EWP units yet with a targeted capacity of some 10 times of the current generation.
