MaREI pulls €750K for energy research

The Centre for Marine and Renewable Energy Ireland (MaREI) has received a funding boost from NTR Foundation, an independent philantropic organisation, to investigate low carbon energy opportunities in Ireland.

The NTR Foundation, which supports projects and organisations in the area of renewable energy and sustainability primarily in Ireland, has provided €750,000 to MaREI Centre that will use it to identify and exploit the opportunities for Ireland related to meeting the country’s future energy needs, Siliconrepublic.com reports.

“Integrated energy systems modelling allows all dimensions of the problem to be analysed together, enabling us to unlock the opportunities associated with the complete transition to a low-carbon economy,” Brian O’Gallachoir, Principal Investigator at MaREI and Professor of Energy Policy and Modelling at UCC, told Siliconrepublic.com.

MaREI is a multi-institutional Science Foundation Ireland research centre working with industry to harness the marine resource through the power of innovation to deliver sustainable development.

The center is located at UCC Beaufort Building, in Ringaskiddy, officially opened in July last year.

The 4,700 m squared five storey building features state-of-the-art wave simulators, test tanks, workshops and offices.

MaREI recently received €1.95 million from Ireland’s Department of Jobs, through Science Foundation Ireland, to develop marine renewable energy remote operation vehicle (MRE-ROV) for challenging wave, tidal, and wind conditions, in collaboration with the University of Limerock.
