MAN Rollo, Bodewes Binnenvaart to Equip First Inland Tanker with LNG-Genset

Never before has an inland tanker been built, powered by 100% LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) propulsion. Currently three different projects have been filed for approval by the European Commission. One of such projects is the result of a collaboration between Bodewes Binnenvaart B.V. (part of DAMEN Shipyards Group), Alewijnse and MAN Rollo B.V. LNG-gensets are the core of this unique 100% propulsion system for a to be built inland tanker.

MAN Rollo is the supplier of the LNG-gensets. The LNG-electric propulsion concept can easily adjust its power output to varying power demand. This has clear benefits from both the perspective of fuel consumption and the cost of maintenance. The inland tanker will furthermore make use of the heat generated by the engine, making the total installation even more energy efficient. The innovative LNG concept thus results in a cost effective and energy efficient operation.

Damen subsidiary Bodewes Binnenvaart B.V. chose to work with MAN Rollo as a partner for the propulsion system because of the high fuel efficiency and the proven reliability of the MAN gas engines. The wide range of available engines furthermore allows for elaborate concept variations. The service network and experience of MAN Rollo in the field of gas engines also played an important role in the choice to work with MAN Rollo.

The LNG-generator sets (1.335 kW power output delivered by three main generator sets and one harbor genset) that are being used for the inland tanker is MAN Rollo’s answer to the increasing demand for LNG propulsion. The increasing demand is driven by the expected future CCNRIII and IV emission standards.

MAN Rollo can offer LNG/CNG electrical propulsion solutions from 34 to 3.000 kW power output.

MAN Rollo is an exhibitor at Europoort 2011. Europoort 2011 takes place from November 8 to 11 in Ahoy Rotterdam.
