Magellan Spirit to be assisted by Excelerate’s LNG carrier

Vessels

Teekay’s LNG carrier Magellan Spirit could be refloated soon as Excelerate Energy’s LNG carrier Excellence is on its way to take onboard a portion of the grounded vessels cargo.

Magellan Spirit ran aground on January 5, fully loaded with the NLNG cargo and the first attempt to free the vessel has failed.

Interfax reports that the Excelerate Energy’s Excellence LNG carrier is heading for the site to perform a ship-to-ship transfer of LNG in order to lighten the Magellan Spirit carrier.

As Teekay LNG’s spokesman Jonathan Anthony told Reuters, performing the ship-to-ship transfer of LNG is one of the steps advised by experts.

Excellence LNG carrier has the capacity of 138,000 cbm could take 80% of the 165,000 cbm Magellan Spirit’s cargo.

Teekay’s LNG carrier, chartered by Swiss company Vitol was on its way to Gwangyang LNG terminal in South Korea.
