Spanish tidal energy developer Magallanes Renovables is reportedly planning to next week start the sea trials of its 2MW Atir platform off Galicia, Spain.

Magallanes Renovables secured the go-ahead from the relevant authorities to undertake the trials at the Vigo estuary, the local news publisher Faro de Vigo has reported.

Following the launch and initial tests at the estuary, the divers will install two-side oriented turbine blades which are 19 meters in diameter on the platform.

After the conclusion of trials in Spain, the platform will be transported to the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) where it will remain for one year for further trials, as part of the Ocean 2G project.

The aim of the project is to test, validate, and pre-certify Magallanes’ second generation (2G) 2MW tidal energy platform solution, progressing it towards commercialization.

To remind, the Atir platform was launched in April this year. It weighs 350 tonnes, and is 42 meters long.
