Last FSRU in seven-vessel conversion program boosts Karpowership’s LNG-to-power value chain

Karpowership, Türkiye’s floating power solutions provider and owner and operator of powerships, has finished its multi-vessel liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier-to-floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) conversion program with the completion of the seventh FSRU at a yard belonging to Singapore-headquartered Seatrium, an offshore engineering, shipbuilding, and marine infrastructure company.

The two companies have held the naming and sailaway ceremony for the LNGT Türkiye, the seventh and final FSRU delivered under their seven-vessel conversion program at Seatrium’s Admiralty Yard.

After its start in 2018, the program involved the conversion of seven LNG carriers into FSRUs, including LNGT Africa, LNGT Asia, LNGT Europe, LNGT Antarctica, LNGT Americas, LNGT Oceania, and LNGT Türkiye.

These FSRUs will support Karpowership’s integrated LNG-to-power value chain and operate alongside the firm’s Powership fleet, supplying feed gas to floating power plants, as a way to strengthen energy security and flexible grid access across four continents, as highlighted by Seatrium.

According to Seatrium, the LNG carrier-to-FSRU conversion program entailed complex cryogenic, marine and gas-handling systems integration works. Naming the last vessel after Karpowership’s home country is said to serve as a fitting tribute to the company’s roots and the strong partnership forged throughout the program.

The company underlined: “LNGT Türkiye also holds special significance as the final project for Karpowership to be completed at Seatrium Admiralty Yard ahead of its scheduled return to the Authorities by 2028.

“The successful completion of the programme reflects the technical excellence, resilience and dedication of the project and engineering teams from both companies who contributed to bringing each vessel into service.”

Karpowership’s fleet of 45 Powerships and total installed capacity exceeding 8,500 MW enables the company to deliver turnkey energy solutions, while offering floating LNG solutions, with a fleet of 11 LNG assets, including those in the pipeline, composed of FSRUs and LNG carriers.

The firm won a three-year project earlier this year, enabling it to deploy a 250 MW powership along with an LNG terminal vessel in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula to provide dispatchable electricity in partnership with CENACE.
