Land Reclaimed for Velana New Seaplane Terminal

Business & Finance

Reclamation of land for Velana International Airport (VIA) new seaplane terminal has been completed, according to MACL (Maldives Airports Company Ltd).

MACL reported that the reclamation of 3.2 hectares of land for the new terminal ended last week.

The reclamation project, worth around $30 million, was awarded to Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) from China.

The new seaplane terminal comes as a part of $800 million mega project to expand and upgrade the Maldives’ main gateway. The terminal will be built on the reclaimed lagoon behind the air traffic control tower on the eastern side of the airport island of Hulhule.

MACL also reported that for the new terminal, some 18,000 square meters of reclaimed land will be needed while the accompanying seaplane hanger will occupy additional 14,000 square meters.

The new terminal along with a new runway — both being built by BUCG — are set to be completed by mid-2018.
