Joint study to assess debris impact on hydrokinetic devices

Research and development study is currently being conducted by Dynamic Systems Analysis and Mavi Innovations in order to assess the impact of floating debris on hydrokinetic energy converters in rivers and oceans.

According to SRM Projects, the industry sponsor of the aforementioned assessment study, it will also evaluate the risk of snagging hydrokinetic devices with marine tow cables.

The project titled ‘Tidal and River Energy Converter Debris Impact Load and Cable Snag Risk Quantification’ is expected to provide the basis for emerging marine renewable energy standards being developed by Canada and other members of the International Electrotechnical Committee.

It is supported by Marine Renewables Canada and the Standards Council of Canada Mirror Committee to IEC/TC114 through a grant from NRCan’s EcoEnergy II program.

Dynamic Systems Analysis is a British Columbia-based ocean engineering consultancy and software developer.

Mavi Innovations is a renewable energy company building cross-flow hydrokinetic turbines that convert energy from tidal and river currents into clean power.
