Japanese Firms Join Forces on LNG-Fueled Ferry

Business & Finance

Japan-based K Line Kinkai and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) have decided to team up in a joint study related to a newbuilding passenger ferry being fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The work would focus on specifications, engine types and related technical verifications for LNG handling aboard the vessel, according to the companies.

K Line Kinkai has been studying the introduction of a ferry fueled by LNG, making it environmentally-friendly and almost completely eliminating SOx emissions and minimizing NOx and CO2 emissions to a certain level.

The company’s collaboration with K Line is expected to accelerate this study in order to introduce Japan’s first LNG-fueled passenger ferry.

K Line Group has also been looking into the introduction of various types of LNG-fueled vessels, including car carriers and tugboats, as well as LNG supply business.
